My Coaching Journey with Dr. Marc Viebahn

Dr. Marc Viebahn is an Executive Search and Leadership Advisor at Interconsilium, a premium leadership consultancy in Düsseldorf, Germany. Since 2000, he has been advising top management and supervisory boards in Germany and Europe. He started his career at McKinsey & Company after completing his studies in Business Administration and Economics at Witten/Herdecke University, UC Berkeley, and EBS University.

Please tell us about your background and work experience prior to starting the LPCC program?

I have been in professional service since 2000. After beginning my career at McKinsey, I shifted my focus to the people and leadership aspects of business. Since 2007, I have been a partner at an executive search boutique in Düsseldorf, Germany. My clientele primarily consists of large family-owned businesses and family offices. My expertise is mainly in executive search and leadership advisory.

What led you to coaching?

Implicitly, coaching techniques have always been a tool I’ve used for better understanding and advising my clients and candidates, as well as in leadership development. However, I had not undergone formal training in coaching. Besides stakeholder-centered coaching, which I utilize quite extensively, I have been eager to enhance my coaching skills to deliver even more value to my clients.

Why did you choose the ACT & Brown Coaching program?

I was seeking an excellent training program with high standards and a close connection to a university. Having had a wonderful time during my initial university studies at Berkeley in the 90s, I wanted to relive some of those experiences and looked for a program in the US, outside Germany or Europe. From the very beginning, ACT/Brown made a great impression on me. All the people I met before making my decision were fantastic, and I felt at the right place even as a non-native English speaker. The availability of a virtual format was certainly an additional plus. Last but not least, Brown University’s reputation also played an important role in my considerations.

What was your overall experience of the program and what has been the most rewarding part of your coaching journey so far?

The experience was outstanding. The faculty was incredible, and the openness, vulnerability, and support of the other participants went way beyond my expectations. The entire program exceeded what I had anticipated. Even after completing the formal training, we maintained contact, continued working on our coaching skills, and supported each other in building our coaching businesses. To be honest, as a non-native speaker, it was an intense program, but the faculty and the other participants were very open, kind, and understanding. Looking back, I can’t imagine a better place for improving my coaching skills.

Tell us about the work you do now and how you are applying your coaching skills?

I integrate coaching skills into all of my service offerings, primarily in executive search and leadership advisory at top-management-level at Interconsilium (www.interconsilium.de). From my perspective, combining ACT/Brown coaching skills with the Marshall Goldsmith Stakeholder Centered Coaching process brings together the best executive coaching frameworks in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. I appreciate the freedom and ability of utilizing different techniques like advisory and coaching in a manner that I hope creates the most value for my clients.
